As the first full moon of Spring rises in tonight’s sky (and as NASA astronauts begin their first mission to circumnavigate her in 50 years!) we are excited to kick off National Poetry Month with some highlights from the latest edition of our literary journal.
In case you missed it in our last Moonbeam, the Elixir Verse Equinox: Arcana is out now, and available wherever books are sold! One of our Founders, El, grabbed the paperback pictured below from local Portland booksellers, Literary Arts, but eBooks are also available directly through our Gumroad shop, and can be purchased here.

This one is a collection that really speaks to the moment, offering hope and renewal in a season where those things feel in desperately short supply. While this edition also features a number of dazzling short stories (which we will be highlighting in May 😉) we are so stoked to spend the next 30 days celebrating the work of the wonderful poets who can be found within its pages.
The first of these poets that we are kicking things off with is a special one, in that she is the only poet in this edition who submitted three poems that all ultimately were enthusiastically selected. Allison P. Brown’s three ‘Remedies’ were exactly the sort of work we hoped we’d get when we put out Arcana’s call—poems that felt like spells. Verses that made our very spirits hum with familiarity. You can read one line quotes from each of her pieces below, or read them all and then some when you grab your copy of Arcana here!
May you find as much magic in these words as we did. ✨📜📖🔮

On a clear night on or near a new moon, return to the place where you first snuck out to stargaze.

“Hear the clatter of cans and jars saying Do not be or be chosen—pour—nourish—warm—return.”

Look at the veins on the leaves as you arrange them. Tree within tree; branching structures to push and pull sweetness and light.
Allison P. Brown, MFA, is a western New York-based poet and editor. She works with student publications and faculty authors across New York state. Her micro-chapbook Small Remedies was recently published by The Engine, Idling, and other work has appeared in Lines + Stars, and Epistemic Literary, among others.
These works and more, featured in the Elixir Verse Equinox: Arcana, out now.
